WASHINGTON (February 21, 2024) – Howard University softball team extended its win streak with a pair of midweek wins over Bowie State (BSU) at Nationals Youth Academy in southeast D.C.
GAME 1: HOWARD 2, BOWIE STATE 1
BSU took the early lead, thanks to a sac fly from Sydney Edmond, 1-0.
Bottom three, graduate outfielder
Bianca Worthy (Goodyear, Ariz.) tied the contest on a passed ball, 1-1. Moments later, junior
Kenna Higa (Honolulu) delivered the go-ahead run and gave the Bison a 2-1 advantage after three.
Despite allowing the early run, third-year Bison
Mia Gonzales (Atwater, Calif.) settled into a groove, tossing 4.1 innings with only three hits and one earned run, before being relieved in the fifth.
Sophomore
Julia Holt (Tucson, Ariz.) came into the contest and held the Bulldogs to one hit in 2.2 innings of work. The Arizona native racked up three strikeouts while securing the save.
Akirra Pullen kept Bowie State in the game, throwing 6.0 innings with three Ks in a losing effort.
GAME 2: HOWARD 2, BOWIE STATE 0
Both squads were scoreless for the first four innings, thanks to solid pitching from BSU's Taylor Dawkins and sophomore
Amelia Weber (Montclair, Calif.).
Bottom five, second-year Bison
Maryn Jordan (San Diego) got HU on the board with an RBI-single to center. Howard scored its second run on a Bowie State error and took a 2-0 advantage after five.
BSU refused to go away, making a late rally in the seventh, but Weber withstood the Bulldogs' late charge and closed the contest with a complete-game shutout.
Weber tossed 7.0 innings while recording 10 strikeouts in the victory.
Offensively, Higa, Jordan and rookie
Merci Hart (Los Angeles) each produced two hits in the win.
