WASHINGTON (December 29, 2024) – Graduate guard
Destiny Howell (Queens, N.Y.) scored a game-high 15 points to lead four Bison in double figures as the Howard University women's basketball team rolled past American, 75-46, at Bender Arena.
The victory snapped a three-game losing skid for the Bison (7-8) while the Eagles (0-11) are still looking for their first win of the season.
Howard jumped to an early 9-2 lead in the first three minutes of the game before American rallied to get the deficit to within four, 14-10, at the end of one quarter.
Then, the Bison began to find their rhythm with Howell and junior forwards
Zennia Thomas (Cleveland) and
Nile Miller (Haddonfield, N.J.) combined for 18 of the team's 22 second quarter points.
Howard led by double digits, 36-20, at the break and never looked back.
The Bison began to substitute liberally as 11 different players scored. Much of the team's best offensive output of the season was shooting 46-percent from the floor, including a season-high 61-percent in the third period and 28 American turnovers that resulted in 35 Howard points.
The Eagles again suffered on offense as the Bison limited them to 32-percent (15-of-48) from the field and 22-percent from beyond the arc (5-of-22).
Howell added three assists to her point total. Freshman guard
Saniyah King (Washington) is the engine that makes the team go, again filled the stat sheet with 12 points, four assists and three steals.
Thomas finished with 11 points, including nine coming in the first half, and Miller, tallied 10 points and three steals.
The Eagles were led by Anna Rescifina with 13 points and Laura Nogues with 8 points.
NEXT UP: Howard opens MEAC (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) play Saturday (Jan. 4) when it hosts Delaware State at 5 p.m., inside Burr Gymnasium.
