WASHINGTON (December 1, 2024) – Graduate guard
Destiny Howell (Queens, N.Y.) scored 21 points but it was not enough as Georgetown University got past the Howard University women's basketball team, 69-63, in a nonconference tilt at Burr Gymnasium.
Howell, the 2022-23 MEAC (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) Player of the Year, tallied 14 of her points in the second half as the Bison went toe-to-toe with their crosstown rival.
The game was an entertaining bout as neither team was able to lead by more than six. There were 19 lead changes and nine ties. It resulted in a personal shootout between Howell and Georgetown's Kelly Ransom, who led all scorers with 28 points.
Howard (5-3) appeared to get a little separation when senior forward
Marissa Steel (Laurel, Md.) scored on a missed attempt to give her team a tenuous six-point lead, 59-53, with 5:07 in the fourth quarter, but the Hoyas reeled off a 16-4 close to win the hard-fought affair.
Nine different players scored for Howard. Junior forward
Zennia Thomas (seven points & career-high 11 rebounds) and freshman guard
Saniyah King (six points, career-high eight assists and only two turnovers).
Junior forward
Nile Miller (Haddonfield, N.J.) made her defensive presence felt with eight points, three steals and a block, along with eight points.
In addition to Ransom's point total, the Hoyas got nine points and 12 rebounds from Ariel Jenkins and nine points from Jaed Wilson.
For the game, the Bison had 17 second chance points and won the fast-break battle, 15-0.
NEXT UP: Howard travels to New Jersey to take on Seton Hall Friday (Dec. 6) at 7 p.m.
