WASHINGTON (November 30, 2024) – Graduate guard
Anwar Gill (Washington) scored 16 of his season-high 18 points in the second half to lead four Bison in double figures but some key inquiries and some deft free throw shooting proved to be the difference as the Howard University men's basketball team fell, 79-75, to Mount St. Mary's (MSM) in a nonconference showdown at Burr Gymnasium.
It was the Bison's third straight loss.
The Bison played without the services of MEAC (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) Preseason Player of the Year senior guard
Bryce Harris (Brentwood, N.Y.) and adding to the team's woes, senior guard
Marcus Dockery (Washington), the team's leading scorer, hobbled through 25 minutes with a leg injury that kept on the bench for the key last 10 minutes of the game.
With Harris and Dockery out of the lineup, Howard (3-5) had to turn to Gill, a graduate transfer from LaSalle. He responded with 5-of-7 shooting from the field and 6-of-8 from the charity stripe.
MSM's kept the hosts on their heels on the combined scoring of Dole Adebayo, Dallas Hibbs and Terrell Ard, Jr., who accounted for 35 of the team's 43 second half points.
The game was hotly contested with both teams taking turns on short runs. There were 11 lead changes and nine ties as neither team led by more than eight points.
Despite playing shorthanded, the scrappy Bison stayed close as Gill, freshman guard
Blake Harper (Washington), junior forward
Dom Campbell (Scarborough, Maine) had an answer for each MSM run. But in the end, The Mount shot 29-of-30 from the free throw line, including a perfect 24-of-24 in the second half.
Campbell (eight rebounds) and Harper (seven boards) combined for 15 of the Bison's 30 rebounds.
MSM (5-2) was led in scoring by Carmelo Pacheco, who tallied all 18 of team-high points in the first half. Hobbs finished with 16 points while Ard, Jr., and Adebayo added 16 points and 11 points, respectively.
NEXT UP: Howard travels to Cincinnati to take on the nationally ranked Cincinnati Bearcats Sunday (Dec. 8). Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
