Volleyball Marks 10th Straight Victory

Bison down NCCU to remain unbeaten in MEAC play

WASHINGTON (October 27, 2024) - Howard University volleyball team posted its 10th consecutive win Sunday afternoon in Burr Gym with a 3-0 victory (25-13, 25-19, 25-9) over North Carolina Central (NCCU).
 
The feat moved the Bison to 16-5 on the season (9-0 MEAC) while the Eagles fell to 5-15 overall (3-6 MEAC).
 
Howard started strong with a quick kill from Rya McKinnon (Hoover, Ala.). Consecutive aces from Aziah Buckner (Memphis, Tenn.) capped an 8-2 run from the Bison, lifting them to a 14-6 lead. The Eagles managed four kills after the crusade, but high-flying attacks from McKinnon and Amanda Ifeanyichukwu (The Woodlands, Texas) pushed the Bison to a 25-13 finish to take the first set.
 
Buckner started the second frame with her third ace of the afternoon, setting the Bison off to an 8-3 lead. Keeping the momentum going, HU doubled NCCU's score, 12-6, minutes later. Getting some air under their wings, the Eagles utilized six kills in an 8-2 run, leveling the board, 14-14. The sudden surge prompted a timeout on the Howard sideline. NCCU came out of the huddle to take the lead for the first time, 15-14. The upper hand was quickly turned as the Bison landed three consecutive attacks, 17-15. The Eagles stayed close behind, but sophomore Gabby Allen (Laurel, Md.) strategically scored points on serves to set the Bison up for the final three points to take the set, 25-19.
 
Making quick work of the final set, Howard broke out to a 6-1 advantage before going on an uncontested six-point charge to double the score, 12-2. The Eagles could only work in five kills as the Bison sent a volley of attacks across the net. Dami Awojobi (Hempstead, N.Y.) closed it out with a kill for a 25-9 finish.
 
Next up, the Bison travel north to shake the Hornets' nest as they face Delaware State Friday (Nov. 1) at 6 p.m.
