Dominant Half Lifts Women’s Soccer

Bison score four times in first half; blanks Seahawks

WASHINGTON (September 24, 2023) – Howard women's soccer (8-2-1, 3-0 NEC) extended their win streak to seven with Sunday afternoon's 4-0 victory over the Wagner Seahawks.

HU dominant from start to finish, outshooting the Seahawks, 24-5.

Senior Marli Berry (Orangevale, Calif.) opened the scoring early when she connected with a pass from fellow senior Nyla Allen (Elmont, N.Y.) three minutes into the matchup, 1-0.

Allen would go on to add to her stat line when she netted a goal of her own with the help of rookie standout Samantha James (Herndon, Va.) just 11 minutes later, 2-0.

In a roundabout fashion, James was next on the list to uplift the Bison. The Virginia native made her mark on the scoreboard with a penalty kick (PK) to the bottom left of the net far from the reach of the keeper, 3-0.

With three minutes left in the half, the Bison saw their way to another scoring opportunity when the Seahawks committed another foul to set the Bison up with a PK. Third-year Bison Rachel Asare (Tamps, Fla.) lined up with the goalie before striking the ball to the bottom of the net for a 4-0 lead before the break.

The Seahawks came out of the second half hungry, putting a shot on goal three minutes into the half. Wagner (WC) would get off three more shots, but Asare's goal would be the final nail in the coffin as the second half ended in a 0-0 stalemate.

Sophomore Kyra Bolden (McLean, Va.) led the Bison charge with eight shots on goal. Duo Allen and James ended the day with three points apiece, adding a goal and assist to their stats.

For WC (3-5-2, 1-2 NEC), Shae McGinty recorded eight saves in 45 minutes of action at goalie.

The Bison are back in action September 28 at 1 p.m. when they face Northeast Conference Preseason Favorite Central Connecticut State in New Britain, Conn.
