Senior Spotlight Featuring Krislyn Marsh

A sit down with MEAC Champion Krislyn Marsh

WASHINGTON (May 24, 2023) – Howard University Department of Athletics continued its Senior Spotlight series with recent graduate and Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Champion Krislyn Marsh (Houston) from the women's basketball team, who was interviewed by rising senior Badi Cross.

Q: What decision made you want to play basketball?
A: I was about five years old watching my older brother play. I wanted to be just like him, so I did everything he was doing. He would always go to the rec center and play basketball. So, I started out copying him. Then, I actually started liking it and then I got better than him (lol).

Q: Who do you model your game after?
A: I fell in love with watching Magic Johnson (NBA Hall of Famer) play because he was a big man that could play all the positions. He could pass and shoot with a high IQ. I wanted to be like him, so I always wanted to take his number (32). I got to meet him this year and I took pictures, so that was just icing on the cake.

Q: What is the most important lesson you have learned from a coach here at Howard?
A: The most important lesson I have learned from a coach is to know yourself. Know who you are, the type of player and to never quit no matter the situation. Keep pushing and never quit on yourself.

Q: What is your fondest memory at Howard?
A: My fondest memory at Howard would be the NCAA Tournament First Round matchup against Incarnate Word.

And you would think, "Why not the MEAC Championship game?" But that one was really special because we were already on Cloud 9 winning the game before. So it's like, "Okay, no one's really believing in us." That underdog-type situation.

And then, we really came out and just shocked the world. And it was just a really good moment because everyone was against us and we went out there and we earned our spot.

Q: How special was it to be part of the first NCAA Tournament team to win a game at Howard?
A: It meant everything because not only did I come here my freshman year to win a championship, but I made history in such a huge way that it is stamped forever.

When I was five years old playing basketball, I never thought about the significant impact of leaving a legacy like this. It blows my mind sometimes.

Q: How have you balanced basketball and your studies?
A: It took me a minute to get my own routines set, but once I got it, I got it.

I found out that I have ADHD, so I had to work extra hard to structure myself in a way to balance basketball, school, social, family, etc. I have a set routine and try not to deviate from it, stay organized because basketball is sometimes spontaneous.

Q: What is some advice you have for future Bison?
A: There's so much (lol). Do not be so hard on yourself, take your time. You know why you are here and if you were not good enough, you would not be here. You got this.

Also, pay attention to the little things or advice people give you when it comes to your sport (or any activities).

Q: How would your teammates describe you in one word and why?
A: They will say I am quiet because I really am quiet (lol).

Q: What (or who) will you miss the most at Howard?
A: OMG, my teammates (lol) because I grew a lot in five years and became a different person. I love the person that I am now and going through that process with my teammates was great. You learn new things, meet new people, but I could not have made it without them.

Q: What is your favorite song to listen to pre-game?
A: Advanced by bktherula.

Q: What are your post-graduate plans?
A: I am still looking to play and I have some interest in playing in summer leagues, but I am still deciding.

Also, I have a couple job opportunities. But, I want to travel to places like Santorini, Greece, France, The Maldives or the Bahamas.
