Softball’s Title Run Ends Versus Coppin State

Bison take third in the MEAC Tournament

NORFOLK, Va. (May 12, 2023) – No. 4 Howard University softball team saw its hopes for a second league title come to an end, falling to No. 5 Coppin State (CSU), 3-0, in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tournament.

HU produced eight hits on the afternoon, including a pair of hits from junior Sydni Jones (Whittier, Calif.) and sophomore Alyssa Vasquez (Downey, Calif.), but unable to deliver the clutch hit as they left nine on base.

After picking up a save in the win over Maryland Eastern Shore earlier, rookie Amelia Weber (Montclair, Calif.) got the starting nod. She tossed two scoreless innings to open the contest until a two-run homer by CSU's Seryna Esparza in the third gave the Eagles a 2-0 advantage.

Howard managed to get runners on base throughout the game, but Coppin State's Vanessa Carrizosa refused to give up runs.

Top seven, CSU's Celeste Gonzales delivered an RBI-single to extend the margin, 3-0.

In their final at-bat, the Bison got a runner in scoring position with two outs, but Carrizosa shutdown any comeback bid for HU.

Weber wrapped up her first season with the Bison, tossing a complete game and striking out a career-high eight batters in the loss.

For CSU (15-27), they reach the MEAC Title game where they face No. 3 North Carolina Central. First pitch is set for noon.

Despite the loss, head coach Tori Tyson and the Bison secured their second consecutive 20-win season. They look to recapture the MEAC Title in spring 2024.
