NORFOLK, Va. (May 10, 2023) – Howard University softball team suffered a tough 6-4 loss to Coppin State (CSU) in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Opening Round at NSU Softball Field.
HU (18-25) produced four runs on eight hits, but unable to recover from four fielding errors on the day.
CSU (13-26) got on the board first with an unearned run by the second baseman, 1-0.
Top three, the Eagles added to their lead with a pair of runs, 3-0.
Coppin State took control in the sixth inning, taking a commanding 6-0 lead on three unearned runs.
Down, but not out, Howard clawed its way back into the contest with four runs in the sixth, 6-4.
HU had one final at-bat in the seventh, but CSU's Vanessa Carrizosa ended the Bison's comeback bid with a strikeout, groundout and flyout.
Freshman
Amelia Weber (Montclair, Calif.) came in relief, tossing 4.2 innings with five strikeouts.
For Coppin State, Manaia Fonoti went 3-of-4 with a RBI single in the victory.
Howard faces the loser between No. 2 Norfolk State and No. 3 North Carolina Central in a win-or-go home scenario Thursday (May 11) at 3 p.m.
