Clayborne, Skeete-Ridley Lead Lacrosse in Loss at Wagner

Bison duo combine for four goals, but not enough

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (April 22, 2023) – Howard University senior Quai Skeete-Ridley (New Carrollton, Md.) and rookie Berkeley Clayborne (Highland Park, Ill.) combined for four goals, but the women's lacrosse team fell at Wagner (WC), 20-5.

HU held its own in possessions with the Seahawks having a slight edge in ground balls, 15-13, and draw controls, 16-12. Skeete-Ridley registered three draw controls while fifth-year senior Andrea Fievre (Snellville, Ga.) notched four ground balls in the loss.

Despite the Bison's efforts, the biggest difference came off turnovers. Howard had 23 turnovers with a 71-percent (15-of-21) clear success rate while WC made nine turnovers with a perfect 100-percent (21-of-21) clear rate.

Wagner scored the opening goal, but back-to-back goals from Clayborne and Skeete-Ridley gave HU an early 2-1 advantage. WC regained the upper hand with a quick 4-0 run, 5-2, but another goal by Clayborne would close the gap after one, 5-3.

In the second, Wagner tallied seven goals and took a commanding 12-3 lead into the break.

After intermission, the Seahawks' momentum continued with three more goals, 15-3.

With less than three minutes remaining in the third, Skeete-Ridley and newcomer Chase Coleman (Houston) recorded consecutive goals to end the third, 15-5.

In the final frame, WC added five insurance goals to down HU, 20-5.

Defensively, junior goalie Jada Auletta (Montclair, N.J.) produced a match-high 10 saves while freshman Kendall Barker (Columbus, Ohio) forced four turnovers in the setback. Sophomore Anya Waller (King of Prussia, Pa.) returned from injury and registered her 200th career save.

For WC (7-7, 6-1 NEC), Megan Greco and Emily Wesoky each had five points in the victory.

Saturday (April 29), HU (0-14, 0-7 NEC) hosts Central Connecticut State in its season finale on Senior Day. The festivities begin at 11 a.m., followed by the first draw at noon inside Greene Stadium.
