Men’s Basketball Opens Title Run Against South Carolina State

No. 1 Bison face No. 8 Bulldogs in the MEAC Quarterfinals

NORFOLK, Va. (March 8, 2023) - Howard University men's basketball team opens the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tournament against South Carolina State (SCSU) Wednesday night inside the Norfolk Scope Arena. Tipoff is slated for 6 p.m.

SERIES RECORD
 
Howard defeated SCSU in their most recent match-up 82-78 (February 27) in Orangeburg, S.C., but the Bulldogs still hold the series advantage at 9-8, dating back to 2006. South Carolina State's last win versus Howard was last year, 58-55, in Orangeburg.

Howard has a very high caliber squad with multiple ways in giving opposing team's nightmares.

The Bison (19-12, 11-3 MEAC) earned their first outright MEAC title since 1987 Thursday (March 2) with an 87-67 win over rival Norfolk State.
 
Sophomore Bryce Harris (Brentwood, N.Y.) led the team with a double-double (22 points and 10 boards), followed by fellow classmate Marcus Dockery (Washington) and junior Jordan Wood (San Antonio), who both had 12 points and senior Khalil Robinson (Columbia, S.C.) with 10 points.
 
SOUTH CAROLINA STATE
 
South Carolina State (5-25, 2-12 MEAC) is currently on a five-game losing streak.
 
South Carolina State is led by junior guard Rakeim Gary (11.5 ppg, team-leading 68 total assists and 25 total steals), sophomore guard Lesown Hellums (11.0 ppg), junior forward Justin Wilson (20 total blocked shots) and junior guards Cameron Jones (8.9 ppg) and Rahsaan Edwards (8.1 ppg, second on team with 58 total assists).
 
UPCOMING SCHEDULE
 
With a Bison win, HU meets either No. 4 Maryland Eastern Shore or No. 5 Morgan State in the MEAC Semifinal Round. Matchup is scheduled for Friday (March 10) at 6 p.m., inside the Norfolk Scope Arena.
