WASHINGTON (March 30, 2023) – Howard University softball team dropped its first home matchup of the season with a 5-3 loss to the Hofstra Pride.
The defeat dropped Howard to 9-17 while the Pride improved to a 12-17 overall record. HU entered the contest with a 5-0 home mark this season.
Howard manufactured three runs on six hits, led by graduate
Kalita Dennis (Elk Grove, Calif.) and sophomore
Alyssa Vasquez (Downey, Calif.) producing two hits apiece.
Hofstra succeeded in an early attack, finding two runs in the top of the first and taking a 2-0 advantage after one inning of play.
The second and third were quick scoreless innings for both teams – each leaving a player on base.
In the fourth, Hofstra widened the gap with grad student Kasey Collins two-run single to left field, 4-0.
Bottom four, the Bison responded with
Sydni Jones (Whittier, Calif.) grounding to second, allowing the junior to reach on an error and driving Dennis home.
Jones got caught in a run-down trying to steal second in the following play, but the out was worth it as the chase gave teammate
Victoria Brown (Carson, Calif.) time to come home on the throw, 4-2.
Next inning, Hofstra retaliated in a big way with a leadoff homer to left center by Meghan Giordano, 5-2.
To open the bottom of the sixth, Vasquez wasted no time hitting a leadoff double to left field on the first pitch. Dennis followed up with a shot to right field, putting runners on first and third.
Now, with Bison on the corners, Brown delivered an RBI-groundout to third and cut the deficit to two runs, 5-3.
HU got the leadoff runner on in its final at-bat, but Hofstra's Nikki Mullin closed the deal with her first save of the season.
Rookie
Amelia Weber (Montclair, Calif.) got the nod in Thursday's contest, throwing 4.1 innings in the loss.
Annabella Pisapia led the Pride with a solid performance inside the circle, tossing five innings in the victory.
The Bison are back in action Saturday afternoon (April 1) as they host Morgan State in a conference doubleheader, beginning 1 p.m. at Washington Nationals Youth Academy in southeast D.C.
