WASHINGTON (March 19, 2023) – The Howard University softball team dropped its series finale to Norfolk State (NSU), 11-3 (f/5), Sunday afternoon.
The defeat gives the Spartans the season series win, improving to 10-11 (2-1 MEAC) on the season while the Bison fall to 8-15 (1-2 MEAC).
The Bison started out promising with leadoff hitter
Jade Greene (Upper Marlboro, Md.) advancing to second base on a wild pitch. With only one out on the board, teammate
Lealani Ricks (Madera, Calif.) followed up with a sac bunt to third, moving Greene one base closer to home. Third base would be as close as Howard would get in the first after back-to-back strikeouts left Ricks stranded.
NSU's offense sparked in the bottom of the second with six runs on four hits, along with three Bison errors. Norfolk State took a commanding 6-0 advantage after two.
Top three, a NSU fielding error put HU back in the game. The mistake cost the Spartans two runs, cutting the deficit to four runs, 6-2.
With momentum building, the Bison made light work of the Spartans in the bottom of the third, downing all three on ground outs.
After placing two Bison on second and third in the top of the fifth, the Spartans switched up pitchers in hopes of slowing down Howard's momentum. The attempt appeared to be in vain as sophomore
Alyssa Vasquez (Downey, Calif.) sent the first pitch to left field, bringing senior
Raye Thomas (Washington) home and closing the gap 6-3.
With Bison on the corners yet again, morale high, and two outs on the board, HU sent in senior
Kalita Dennis (Elk Grove, Calif.) to pitch hit for rookie
Kelyse Stewart (Lee's Summit, Mo.). In a miscommunication, the All-American went for a bunt, resulting in Howard's final out to close their half in the fifth.
The Spartans worked in four unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth, closing out the series with a 11-3 win.
The Bison continue their road action Saturday (March 26) at 1 p.m. when they travel to Baltimore to take on Coppin State.
