CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (February 26, 2023) – Howard University softball team suffered setbacks on the final day of the Cavalier Classic, hosted by the University of Virginia (UVA). In game one, HU fell to host Cavaliers in six innings, 8-0, and dropped a close one to crosstown rival George Washington (GW), 7-5.

Second-year Bison
Alyssa Vasquez (Downey, Calif.) and
Alyssa Watson (Eastvale, Calif.) were the lone Bison to register a hit versus UVA.
HU made spectacular plays in the first two innings to keep the Cavs off the board until the third inning where UVA scored four times and took a 4-0 lead after three innings.
Virginia added two more runs in the fourth to extend the lead, 6-0, and finished the contest in six after two more runs crossed the plate, 8-0.

In the nightcap, HU registered five runs on 10 hits.
Senior catcher
Luz Aguilasocho (Grand Terrace) led the Bison attack, going a perfect 3-of-3 with two runs scored.
After three scoreless innings, Watson ended the scoring drought with an RBI-single through the right side, 1-0, but the Colonials responded with an RBI-single of their own to tie the game at one apiece after four.
Top six, Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Preseason Player of the Year graduate
Kalita Dennis (Elk Grove, Calif.) put the Bison back ahead with an RBI-double, driving home sophomore
Lealani Ricks (Madera, Calif.), 2-1.
Next frame, GW earned its first lead of the game after scoring twice, 3-2.
Top seven, HU reclaimed the upperhand with three runs, 5-3, but George Washington rallied in its last at-bat, producing four runs, including a tying two-run inside-the-park-homer and walk-off two-run home run over the left center fence, 7-5.
UPCOMING SCHEDULE
The Bison will play Bowie State in a doubleheader Wednesday (March 1) at the Nationals Youth Academy in D.C., with the games scheduled to start at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m., respectively.
