Softball Falls Twice at the Cavalier Classic

Bison fall to Longwood and UMES

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (February 25, 2023) – Howard University softball team dropped a pair of contests on the first day of the Cavalier Classic, hosted by the University of Virginia. HU opened the tourney with a 6-2 setback against Longwood, followed by a 9-4 loss to conference rival Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) in the nightcap.
 
HOWARD 2, LONGWOOD 6
 
Howard opened the tournament producing two runs on six hits.
 
Longwood (6-6) got on the board first with Jaden Pone stealing home, 1-0.
 
Top two, the Lancers' Maryanna Guy delivered a two-run blast over the left field fence and extended the lead after two innings of play, 3-0.
 
In the fifth, HU got on the board with an unearned run and cut the deficit to two runs after five, 3-1.
 
Top six, Longwood responded with a three-run inning to put the game out of reach, 6-1.
 
DMV native second-year Bison Jade Greene (Upper Marlboro, Md.) closed the scoring with an RBI-walk, 6-2.
 
HOWARD 4, UMES 9
 
In the nightcap, HU racked up four runs on eight hits, including multi-hit performances from newcomers Kelyse Stewart (Lee's Summit, Mo.) and Amelia Weber (Montclair, Calif.).
 
UMES tallied three first-inning runs, capped off by a two-run homer from Ameenah Ballenger, 3-0.
 
Top six, the Hawks added six more runs and took a 9-0 lead going into the bottom half.
 
Down, but not out, the Bison refused to go away.
 
Howard manufactured four runs in the sixth, highlighted by a two-run double from freshman Makaela Digaudio (Corona, Calif.) down the leftfield line, but the comeback would fall short.

With bad weather in the forecast, HU meets St. John's Saturday (Feb. 25) at 3:30 p.m.
