WASHINGTON (February 17, 2023) – Howard University women's tennis team earned its first win of the 2023 campaign, knocking off Johns Hopkins, 5-2, at the Washington Tennis & Education Foundation's (WTEF) East Capitol Campus in Southeast D.C.
HU (1-2) grabbed the upper hand early, winning two-out-of-three in doubles play.
Sophomore
Nadia Pegram (Naples, Fla.) and reigning Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Rookie of the Week freshman
Selah Stibbins (Minneapolis) served as the club's top doubles team, defeating Johns Hopkins' Jay Xiao and Kamila Wong, 6-2.
Senior
Alexandra Blackwell (Austin, Texas) and reigning MEAC Player of the Year
Jordan Grayson (Gaithersburg, Md.) took down the Blue Jays' Christina Huynh and Niamh Harding, 6-4.
In singles competition, Grayson, Pregram and seniors
Yemisi Ifederu (London, England) and
Emnet Simunyola (Lorton, Va.) won in straight sets.
Saturday (Feb. 18), HU battles Villanova in nonconference play. Match time is set for 2 p.m. at the WTEF East Capitol Campus.
