LAS VEGAS (December 17, 2023) – Jackson State (JSU) used a second half charge to down the Howard University men's basketball team, 81-74, in the CP3 HBCU Challenge, hosted by NBA Superstar Chris Paul, at the Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas.
Four Bison reached double figures in scoring, led by junior guard
Marcus Dockery (Washington) with a game-high 20 points on 8-of-15 shooting, including 4-of-8 from downtown.
HU (4-7) jumped out to an early 11-0 lead, capped off by a fast break dunk from third-year Bison
Bryce Harris (Brentwood, N.Y.).
JSU gradually chipped away with several runs, erasing the double-digit deficit while taking its first lead after a layup from Treyon Johnson, 23-21.
Both squads went back-and-forth throughout the first half until HU regained the upper hand with a seven-point advantage at the 1:23 mark, thanks to a fast break layup from Dockery off a turnover, 39-32.
With less than a minute before intermission, Jackson State closed the period with a quick 4-0 spurt to trim the halftime margin to three, 39-36.
After more than five minutes into the second half, JSU reclaimed the lead with a three-pointer from Jayme Mitchell, 52-50. From that point, the Tigers never looked back.
Jackson State extended its advantage to double digits on multiple occasions, including its largest lead with less than five minutes left, 71-58. HU refused to go away, but unable to overcome the large deficit.
Harris finished with 15 points on 7-of-8 shooting while graduate guard
Isiah Warfield (Monaca, Pa.) recorded 12 points and five dimes. Second-year Bison
Shy Odom (Roxbury, Mass.) added 10 points, four rebounds and four assists in a losing effort.
For JSU (3-7), five Tigers reached double figures in scoring, led by Jordan O'Neal with 19 points.
Later today, HU closes out the CP3 HBCU Challenge with another Southwestern Athletic Conference opponent, Texas Southern. Tipoff is slated for 6 p.m. (ET) / 3 p.m. (PT).
