Women's Soccer Ends Season in Conference Semifinals

Mia Young scores lone goal for Bison

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – #4 Howard women's soccer (12-6-2, NEC 6-3-1) concludes their historic season at their first appearance in the Northeast Conference (NEC) Semifinals with a 2-1 loss to #2 Central Connecticut (10-4-4, NEC 7-0-3).

After playing to a 0-0 draw through the first 45 minutes, the Bison capitalized on a free kick in the 56th minute. Sophomore Mia Young (Plantation, Fla.) converted her shot to the top right corner into a 1-0 lead over the Blue Devils.

The Bison defense remained unshakable spearheaded by NEC Goalkeeper of the Year Trinity Knox (Atlanta). Fort Knox recorded back-to-back saves in the 72nd minute to keep CCSU at bay, but foul trouble in the box would give the Blue Devils an opportunity to strike.

Lining up with the keeper, CCSU's Aoife Horgan shot one past the Bison in goal to level the board 1-1 with two minutes and seven seconds left in regulation.

Fighting to end the game, CCSU got one more shot off but fell short forcing the first overtime period of the NEC Semifinals.

After holding each other in place through the first extra 10-minute period, CCSU scored the golden goal one minute into the second overtime period.

The Bison nearly balanced the board in the 105th minute when rookie Mimi Richards got a shot to the bottom center. The Blue Devil in goal was quick to thwart the opportunity away.

CCSU answered back with an attempt of their own, but conference heavyweight Knox took the time to notch her final save of the season.

Samone Knight attempted to push the semifinal matchup into PKs with a last-chance effort that shot out right of the net closing the night 2-1 Blue Devils.

Knox ended the night with eight saves finishing her rookie season just four shy of 100. Her .835 SV% marks the Atlanta native as first in the conference.

Team captain Melea Earley (La Mirada, Calif.) ends her junior season leading the Bison in goals (12), points (28), shots (68), and SOG (37).

Standout rookie Samantha James ended her breakout season aiding in a team-high eight assists.
