Nassau, Bahamas (November 19, 2023) - The Howard University women's basketball team scrapped and clawed against another quality opponent, but another cold fourth quarter shooting performance downed the Bison as they fell to Memphis, 52-43, at the Battle 4 Atlantis Tournament.
Junior guard
Nyla Cooper (Fayetteville, N.C.) had her best effort of the season, leading her team with 10 points. Redshirt freshman guard
Tyana Walker (Leawood, Kan.) pulled down a career-high eight boards, along with six points and three dimes, in the loss.
The Bison (1-5) fell behind early, 18-10, but a strong second quarter kept them close as they trailed, 28-20, at intermission. Then, Howard erased the deficit and outscored the Tigers, 16-8, in the third period and tied the contest at the end of three, 36-36. Then came what has become the dreaded fourth quarter.
Memphis outscored the Bison, 16-7, but their efforts were aided and abetted by the Bison, who missed 12-of-13 shots from the field and 7-of-12 from the charity stripe.
Junior forward
Vanessa Blake (Summerville, S.C.) produced eight points and seven rebounds while second-year Bison forward
Nile Miller (Haddonfield, N.J.) added six boards, five points and a pair of blocks.
The Bison have played great defense in this highly regarded tournament, but the cold shooting and poor free throw shooting has proved to be the difference.
NEXT UP: Howard will take on DePaul in its final matchup Monday (Nov. 20). Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
