DOVER, Del., – The Bison start their postseason journey in the winner's column. The Bison (16-13) cruised to a 3-0 sweep (25-12, 25-15, 25-7) with transfer Amanda Ifeanyichukwu (The Woodlands, Texas) leading the way with 10.5 points as Howard University completed the stampede in the 2023 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Volleyball Championship quarterfinals at Memorial Hall Gym.
Senior Jennifer Bolden (Los Angeles, Calif.) led the Bison offense with nine kills and hit .375 for the match, while Ifeanyichukwu put up eight kills with five blocks. Cimone Woodard (Missouri City, Texas) and Dami Awojobi (Hempstead, Ny.) contributed seven kills apiece while MEAC Player of the Year Rya McKinnon (Hoover, Ala.) added six kills and a team-high four service aces.
Howard came out of the gate arms blazing as they took an early 6-2 lead over Morgan State. MSU pulled within four points, 10-6, but a 7-3 run by Howard put the Bison up 17-9 following a service ace from Leah Reeves (Allen, Texas). The Bison closed out the set on an 8-3 run taking the set 25-12 and gaining the 1-0 advantage for the match.
Howard again came out of the gates on a mission taking the 9-3 lead with six points coming off Bison kills. The Bears came as close as five points, 10-5, but Howard pulled away from there quickly opening a 10-point lead, 19-9 after a 9-4 run. Both teams closed out set two on a six-point run with Howard claiming the 25-15 victory and going up 2-0 in the match.
A 6-0 run opened the third set for the Bison who utilized their experienced lineup to their advantage. The Bears went on a 4-2 run pulling within four points, 8-4, but would only score three more the remainder of the set as Howard closed out the set and match on a 17-3 rally to clinch the victory and advance to the semifinals.
Jourdan Page led the Bears (8-22) with five kills while Justyus Jackson and Jada Williams, a MEAC All-Rookie team honoree, added four kills each.
The Bison are back in action on November 18th when they face Delaware State in the MEAC semifinal round at 8:30 PM.
