WASHINGTON (November 14, 2023) – Guards
Tyana Walker (Leawood, Kan.) and
Iyanna Warren (Accokeek, Md.) each scored 11 points and second-year Bison
Nile Miller (Haddonfield, N.J.) added a double-double (career-high 13 boards & 10 points) but Howard University women's basketball team could not overcome a poor free throw shooting performance in a 65-51 loss to Duquesne in a nonconference game at Burr Gymnasium.
For the second straight game, the Bison (1-3 overall) got off to a good start, taking a 20-17 lead in the first 10 minutes.
Then, the Dukes (2-1) began to find some rhythm as Naelle Bernard and Precious Johnson began to put their imprint on the game. Bernard did most of her damage from the outside, connecting on 3-of-5 from beyond the arc. Johnson was effective around the basket, hitting 4-of-5 from the floor and grabbing seven rebounds.
Howard trailed by 10 at one point in the early third before Warren and Walker combined to help their team cut the deficit to four, 48-44, at the end of the period.
HU was able to stay close with some tough defense and rebounding, limiting Duquesne to only four free throws over the first seven minutes; however, they unable to capitalize as they missed several free throws and allowed the Dukes to outscore them, 10-0, over the last 3:02.
For the game, Howard shot 10-of-21 and committed 22 turnovers.
Bernard led all scorers with 18 points. Amaya Hamilton chipped in 12 points and Johnson finished with a double-double (11 points & 11 boards) in the win.
Howard outrebounded the Dukes, 49-36.
NEXT UP: Howard travels to the Bahamas where it opens play in the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament against the University of Mississippi Saturday (Nov. 18). Tipoff is set for noon.
