WASHINGTON (October 7, 2023) - The Howard University women's swimming & diving team kicked off its first home meet Saturday afternoon at the prestigious Battle at the Burr to a packed Burr Natatorium. The Bison earned five top finishes in the 127-97 loss to Georgetown, including a new school record.
The women opened the meet with a new program record when they bested the Hoyas in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:43.69. The relay team consisting of Chanice Posada (Houston), Zaylie-Elizabeth Thompson (Nassau, Bahamas), Zuilda Nwaeze (Columbia, Md.) and Isabella Fountain (White Plains, N.Y.) knocked down the former record of 1:46.00, which was set at last year's Northeast Conference Championships.
"We had a vison for this meet and surpassed it," said Fountain, who served as the anchor on both record-breaking teams.
Fountain went on to collect a solo first-place finish when she won the 50 Free with a time of 23.99.
In her first individual swim of the meet, Nwaeze also picked up a top finish, beating out the competition by seconds in the 200 Free (1:53.51).
In one of the most exciting races of the afternoon, Thompson went stroke-for-stroke with Georgetown's Alex Breuer (Jacksonville, Fla.) in the 200 IM. The Bahamian native beat out the Hoya by a tenth of a second to claim Howard's final individual finish. Falling short by only a hand, Thompson nearly grabbed a second first-place finish in the 100 Breast, but .09 seconds would hand her a runner-up spot.
Staying strong in their staple event, the Bison closed out the meet with a top finish in the 200 Free Relay. With the Hoyas right on their tails, the team consisting of Fountain, Jasmine Morgan (Chicago), Summer McKoy (Pikesville, Md.) and Kelsey Roberson (West Orange, N.J.) swam a time of 1:36.34, besting the Hoyas by .18 seconds.
Howard is back in action Saturday, October 14, at 1 p.m., when they take on Mount St. Mary's in Emmitsburg, Maryland.
