WASHINGTON (October 15, 2023) - Howard University women's soccer (10-4-2, 5-2-1 NEC) is back on the winning track with Sunday afternoon's 3-1 win over LIU (6-7-2, 2-5-1 NEC).
Â
With the victory, HU secured its first 10-win season since 2019.
Â
The quick-paced aggressive plays were evenly matched as both teams held each other at bay until the Bison broke the stalemate in the 30th minute.
Â
Positioning her teammates, redshirt sophomore Samone Knight (The Woodlands, Texas) aimed a throw-in to senior Marli Berry (Orangevale, Calif.) where she chipped the ball to team-leading scorer junior Melea Earley (La Mirada, Calif.), who won her one-on-one with the keeper, 1-0.
Â
Just nine minutes later, Berry earned a goal of her own with the help of rookie standout Samantha James (Herndon, Va.). Chasing the ball down in the top left corner, James got a foot on it before crossing the ball over where Berry lined up with the goal for the shot, 2-0.
Â
The Bison kept up the tenacity into the second half, sending five shots to the goal before scoring.Â
Â
Howard connected with the net in the 64th minute when a shot by James was blocked only to be ricocheted to an incoming Zoe Moore (Tampa, Fla.). The Florida native's quick shot was rejected this time back to James, who was ready to play clean up. James took her final shot, making it just right of the keeper's fingertips for a 3-0 lead.
Â
Itching to get on the board, LIU joined the Bison in the 78th minute when a big pass to Grace Henning put LIU on the board, 3-1.
Â
HU held a slight edge over LIU, taking advantage of 16 (9) shots, compared to the Sharks 15 (5).
Â
Rookie keeper Trinity Knox (Atlanta) added four more saves to the season's stats.
Â
Seven Bison made scoring attempts with three sealing the deal.
Â
The Bison are back on the road Sunday, October 22, when they face Merrimack in North Andover, Mass. at 1 p.m.
