WASHINGTON (January 7, 2023) -
Marcus Dockery (Washington) scored a career-high 19 points and second-year Bison
Bryce Harris (Brentwood, N.Y.) added 12 points to lead the Howard University men's basketball team to an 84-64 win over Delaware State University (DSU) in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) opener at Burr Gymnasium.
A 6-foot-2 sophomore transfer from Maryland, Dockery connected on 7-of-13 from the field, including 5-of-8 from beyond the arc, and set the tone for HU, who had one of their better shooting games on 58-percent (30-of-51), including 11-of-22 from the three-point line.
Dockery's individual performance aside, Howard was able to cruise to the easy win, using its depth to wear down the Hornets (1-13, 0-1 in the MEAC), who have now lost 12 in a row.
The starting five, consisting of Dockery, Harris, D.C. native sophomore guard
Elijah Hawkins (nine points and eight assists) and Massachusetts product freshman forward
Shy Odom (eight points & five rebounds) kept the Hornets at bay with their production, but it was the contributions of reserves graduate guard
Jelani Willaims (10 points on 3-of-3 shooting), senior guard
Khalil Robinson (Columbia, S.C.) and others who wore down the visitors.
In all, the Howard bench accounted for 36 of its points. The Bison dominated the paint area with 34 points and scored 32 points off Delaware State turnovers.
Delaware State was led by O'Koye Parker with 13 points off the bench and Martez Robinson with 11 points in a losing cause.
The Bison will look to continue their winning ways when they travel to Princess Anne, Md., to take on the Hawks of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Monday (Jan. 9) at 7:30 p.m. inside the William P. Hytche Athletic Center.
