NEW ORLEANS (September 3, 2022) – Howard University women's volleyball team came up short against Kansas City in a five-set thriller (25-22, 10-25, 25-23, 31-29, 10-15) at the Green Wave Classic, hosted by Tulane University.
With the loss, HU fell to 2-3 while the Roos improved to 3-3 on the young season.
A trio of Bison produced double-digit kill performance, led by sophomore
Dami Awojobi (Hempstead, N.Y.) with match-high 16 kills in the loss.
Both squads were deadlocked late in the opening set, 22-22, until HU closed out the game with three straight kills and took the first frame, 25-22.
Kansas City rebounded with a game two win, 25-10, and held on to take set three, 25-23.
HU grabbed game four and extended the contest to a winner-take-all five set, 31-29.
In the pivotal fifth set, Howard took the early, but the Roos rallied to take game five, 15-10, and match, 3-2.
Senior
Kayla Diaz (Nanuet, N.Y.) and sophomore
Bria Woodard (Missouri City, Texas) each produced a double-double while second-year middle blocker
Cimone Woodard (Missouri City, Texas) racked up 12 kills and three total blocks in a losing effort.
Raina Smith and Georgia Mullins led the Roos with 14 kills and 11 kills, respectively.
On Sept. 9-11, Howard goes to Fairfield, Conn., for the Fairfield Invitational, hosted by Fairfield University.
