A chat with MEAC Champion Monet Bowen

WASHINGTON (August 3, 2022) – Howard University Department of Athletics Senior Spotlight series rolls on with another graduate edition, featuring Florida native Monet Bowen (Jacksonville), who was interviewed by Greg Jones.

Q: What will you miss about Howard after graduation?
A: I will miss the people and the community. I've met a lot of lifelong friends, professors and coaches. I've just been surrounded by a lot of great people over these past four years and I am definitely going to miss that community.

Q: What was your favorite moment at Howard?
A: My last meet because it was really nice seeing all the hard work and dedication pay off in person. It was great to experience in real time; especially with the women's team.

Q: What are your plans after graduation?
A: I will be moving to New York City and working with the NFL's (National Football League) Junior Rotational Program.

Q: What advice would they give a future Bison?
A: My advice would be to prioritization because it's one of the keys for success. There are a lot of responsibilities and distractions in D.C., so it is important to designate time for the most important things you have going on in your life.

Q: When did you start running track?
A: I started running track in seventh grade.

Q: What are some obstacles you faced throughout your collegiate career, how did you overcome them?
A: I had knee surgery my senior year of high school, right before coming to Howard. So, dealing with rehab and getting back healthy was a big learning challenge.

Q: How do you ease your mind and prepare mentally for track meets?
A: I cleared my mind with my favorite music artist Kanye West.

Q: Which sport figures have inspired you throughout your track career?
A: Allyson Felix (American Olympic sprinter) because she is very decorated. In her career, she faced and overcame adversity, including maternity. She has brought a light on women in sports.

Q: Do you plan on continuing your track career after college?
A: I do not plan on continuing my track career after college.

Q: What accomplishments are you most proud of in your career?
A: I am most proud of overcoming my knee injury because I didn't think I would be able to compete at a high level again. So, being able to achieve that goal was rewarding.
