WASHINGTON (August 27, 2022) – Howard University women's volleyball team cruised past crosstown rival Georgetown in straight sets (25-14, 25-17, 25-19) at McDonough Arena.
 
With the victory, HU improved to 2-0 while the Hoyas dropped to 0-3 on the young season.
 
Collectively, the Bison produced a .362 hitting percentage, led by freshman standout Rya McKinnon (Bessemer, Ala.). The Alabama native eclipsed a .370 hitting percentage while racking up a team-best 13 kills in the victory.
 
Georgetown held a 9-7 edge in the opening set until the Bison scored five straight points, highlighted by a pair of service aces from senior setter Kayla Diaz (Nanuet, N.Y.), 12-9. GU pulled within two midway through the set, 14-12, but Howard closed out the game with an 11-2 run and took the first frame, 25-14.
 
In game two, both squads were deadlocked at 13 apiece until HU registered five consecutive points, 18-13, and took a commanding 2-0 lead.
 
Howard led from start-to-finish in the third set en route to the second win of the season.
 
Diaz had 31 assists and five digs while senior libero Essence Bell (Ocala, Fla.) recorded 16 digs in the win.
 
For the Hoyas, Mary Grace Goyena finished with nine kills, seven digs and a pair of aces in the loss.
 
On Sept. 2-3, Howard travels to New Orleans for the Green Wave Classic, hosted by Tulane University.
