WASHINGTON (June 15, 2022) – Howard University rising senior journalism major
Shianne Knight begins this year's Senior Spotlight series with a graduate edition, featuring women's soccer teammate
Kiara Flynn (Ontario, Canada).
Q: What is your favorite part about playing soccer?
A: My favorite part about soccer is the people I've met over the years. I have met my best friends because of this sport and that is something I will forever be thankful for.
Q: How did you get started in playing soccer?
A: Honestly, when I was younger, my parents made me participate in every sport to see what I liked. I excelled in soccer from the beginning and never looked back.
Q: What kept you motivated?
A: My love for the game and just knowing I couldn't allow myself to stop now, even when it got tough. Also, throughout the years, I've had great coaches that helped me through the rough patches.
Q: If you were not competing in soccer, what sport would you play?
A: I would definitely be playing hockey. That was the other sport I played competitively until I was 12 years old.
Q: Who is your role model?
A: My parents and best friend, Shaw, are my role models.
Q: What are your favorite memories at Howard University?
A: Definitely the spring because it was party season. Just late night hangouts with friends where we enjoyed long conversations.
And, of course, winning the SWAC title (Southwestern Athletic Conference) my freshman year is unforgettable.
Q: What's your favorite sport to watch at Howard University?
A: Basketball is the most exciting, for sure. Burr Gymnasium brings great vibes.
Q: What are your plans after graduation?
A: Currently, I have an internship for the summer and will be pursuing my master's degree in the fall.
Q: What or who will you miss at Howard?
A: My girls
Victoria Thornton,
Morgan Paige,
Thalia Boucher and
Kaylani Lee Green. Also, I'll miss walking through campus on a sunny, nice day. Oh, and of course, and Mr.
Paul Bowden (Senior Associate Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Support Services).
Q: What advice would you give to future Bison?
A: Do anything you want because life is short. These four years flew by so do not live in fear and take chances. Go out with your friends and make the most incredible memories possible.
Q: How do you feel you've improved from freshman to senior year, on or off the field?
A: On the field, I gained more confidence since my freshman year. I was always super nervous before matches and that seemed to gradually fade away as the years went on. Off the field, I really grew into who I'm meant to be in the best way possible and will definitely continue to work on that inner growth.
