Odom, Men’s Golf Win PGA Works Title

Senior golfer takes home individual crown for the second year in a row

PHILADELPHIA (May 4, 2022) – Howard University men's golf team won the 2022 PGA Works Collegiate Championship after shooting a tournament-best 287 (-1) in the final round.

HU shot 882 (+18) during the three-day event, collectively, outlasting second-place Chicago State by one stroke (883, +19).

"The older guys did their jobs," said Howard Director of Golf Sam Puryear. "It was a total team effort. We said we wanted to win an HBCU national championship one day, and we got it."

Senior Gregory Odom (Memphis, Tenn.) led the way, winning his second consecutive individual title after posting a tournament-low 68 (-4) during the third round. Overall, the Memphis native finished 8-under par (208).

"I was just trying to keep hitting golf shots," said Odom. "Coming into today three shots back, I knew my guys would stay strong. Today, we overcame obstacles. This is huge for the Howard golf team."

Odom's incredible season continues as he accepted a sponsor exemption to compete in the Wells Fargo Championship, held at the TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm (May 5-8).

Fellow classmate Everett Whiten Jr. (Chesapeake, Va.) claimed second place behind Odom, recording 4-under par (212) in three days.

Rookie Justin Green (Chesapeake, Va.) produced a 231 (+15) over the three-day span, followed by sophomore Joshua Siplin (Orlando, Fla.) and junior Edrine Okong (Lugazi, Uganda) registering 233 (+17) and 234 (+18), respectively.

Howard wrapped up its second spring season under Coach Puryear, highlighted with victories at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Championship and PGA Works Collegiate Championship.
