Lacrosse Battles, But Fall to Bulldogs

Bryant pulls away to down Bison

WASHINGTON (April 9, 2022) – Howard University women's lacrosse team battled, but fell to the Bryant Bulldogs, 22-7, at Greene Stadium.

HU (1-12, 0-4 NEC) scored seven goals on 15 shots, led by juniors Josie Mallory (Charlottesville, Va.) and Quai Skeete-Ridley (New Carrollton, Md.) with two goals apiece.

Bryant (BU) jumped out to an early 2-0 advantage, but back-to-back goals from Skeete-Ridley tied the contest at two apiece with more than six minutes remaining in the opening frame, 2-2. BU responded, scoring four unanswered goals to close the first period, 6-2.

In the second, Bryant kept the pressure on and ballooned the margin to eight, 10-2, but third-year Bison Sydney Kates (Cleveland) found Mallory cutting to the net and stopped the Bulldogs' run, 10-3.

BU answered and finished the half with five consecutive goals and held a 12-goal lead at the break, 15-3.

Bryant (8-2, 4-0 NEC) scored three times after intermission, but junior Madison Joines (Winston-Salem, N.C.) registered the Bison's four goal of the day to end the Bulldogs' 8-0 run, 18-4. BU finished the third with two more goals, 20-4.

HU outscored Bryant in the fourth, 3-2, thanks to goals by Mallory, graduate Lailah Robey (Chesapeake Beach, Md.) and junior Heidi Chicas (Hyattsville, Md.).

Joines and Robey each forced a pair of turnovers while junior Talia Coryat (Orlando, Fla.) had two ground balls in the loss.

Newcomer Anya Waller (King of Prussia, Pa.) racked up a match-high 15 saves.

Skylar Simmonds led the Bulldogs with six goals while Emily Diaz added 16 draw controls and seven ground balls in the win.

On April 16, Howard travels to New Britain, Conn., to face Central Connecticut State in a Northeast Conference showdown. Match time is slated for 1 p.m.
