Women’s Tennis Comes Up Short in MEAC Final

Butcher and Grayson earn All-Tournament honors

CARY, N.C. (April 30, 2022) – Top-seeded Howard University women's tennis team came up short in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Title match, falling to No. 3 South Carolina State (SCSU), 4-0, at Cary Tennis Park.

Freshmen Sifa Butcher (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) and Jordan Grayson (Gaithersburg, Md.) earned All-Tournament honors after knocking off SCSU's Rachida Berjane and Ikram Rassif in the championship round, 6-3. On the season, the duo finished with a 12-2 mark, including a perfect 6-0 in league play.

South Carolina State edged out the Bison despite HU's efforts in doubles competition, winning the next two doubles matches, including a nail-biting 7-6 [7-3] in the deciding contest.

Junior Hana El Sherif (Cairo, Egypt), All-MEAC First Team selection, was on the verge of sweeping her singles match, but the Lady Bulldogs won three singles contests beforehand to take the match, 4-0.

Grayson, MEAC Player of the Year, rallied and forced a third set in her singles match, but was also unfinished.

SCSU (9-9) won their third straight MEAC title (16th overall).

For HU (10-5), they took home their first MEAC regular season title since 2015.

After reaching the title match for the first time since 2010, the Bison look to build on this year's success as they continue their pursuit of a MEAC Championship.
