COLLEGE PARK, Md. (March 19, 2022) – Howard University senior thrower
Diana Effiom (Dallas) broke her own record at the Maryland Invitational, hosted by the University of Maryland.
The Dallas native shattered her previous mark (50.45 meters) with a new school record, tossing over 170 feet (51.97 meters). Overall, Effiom placed third overall in the event.
She also took part in the discus, claiming second place (41.08 meters).
Freshman
Nikayla Fitzgerald (Kyle, Texas) and
Ja'Tae Joyner (Bowie, Md.) took first (5.95 meters) and second (5.20 meters), respectively, in the long jump. Both Bison also competed in the triple jump where Joyner and Fitzgerald earned second (12.33 meters) and third (11.48 meters), respectively.
On the track, seniors
Jessika Gbai (Philadelphia) and
Ameenah Saalih (Willingboro, N.J.) and newcomers
Sherri-Anne Norton (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and
Tiffani-Rae Pittman (Bowie, Md.) won the 4x100 relay, clocking in at 45.24.
In the 100-meter dash, Gbai, Pittman and rookie
Lamaria Washington (Miami) went first (12.12), second (12.19) and third (12.26), respectively.
Washington also took part in the 200-meter dash, finishing runner-up (25.00) behind teammate senior
Kennedy Lewis (Atlanta/24.83).

Ozioma Scott (Georgetown, Guyana) claimed first overall in the 4x400 relay, producing a time of 3:42.53.
In the 100-meter hurdles, sophomore
Kaya-Rae Dunbar (Burtonsville, Md.) and senior
Jessica Wright (Durham, N.C.) earned first (14.16) and second (14.48), respectively. Wright also competed in the 400-meter dash, winning with a mark of 53.94.
Other notable runners include third-year Bison
Dasia Wilson (Philadelphia) claiming first in the 800-meter run (2:16.78) and fellow classmate
Monika Williams (Denver) taking second in the 400-meter hurdles (1:04.92).
Next weekend, the program will be split into two groups. One group will travel to Austin, Texas for the 94
th annual Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays (March 23-26), hosted by the Longhorns. The other will head to Raleigh, N.C., for the annual Raleigh Relays (March 24-26), hosted by the Wolfpack.
