No. 1 Women’s Basketball Squares Off Against No. 2 Spartans for the MEAC Title

Bison looking to dance for the first time since 2001

WASHINGTON (March 11, 2022) – No. 1 Howard University women's basketball team squares off against No. 2 Norfolk State (NSU) for the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Championship. Saturday's (March 12) showdown starts at 3:30 p.m. inside the Norfolk Scope Arena, live on ESPN+.

MATCHUP PREVIEW
 
Saturday's clash will be the third time between Howard and Norfolk State this season with both clubs winning on their home court.
 
On Feb. 10, the Bison topped NSU, 71-64, inside Burr Gymnasium.
 
In the regular season finale (March 3), HU came up short at Norfolk State, 62-58, inside Echols Hall.
 
HOWARD
 
HU (19-9) looks to punch its ticket to the Big Dance for the first time since 2001. Also, with a win, the Bison secure their first 20-win season since that same season.
 
In the tournament, Howard averages 77.5 points per game (ppg) while holding opponents to 52.5 ppg.
 
Howard's road-to-the-final began with an 87-51 victory over No. 8 Delaware State Wednesday (March 9), followed by a 14-point win, 68-54, over No. 5 Maryland Eastern Shore.
 
This season, the Bison are led by junior Iyanna Warren (Accokeek, Md.) and sophomores Destiny Howell (Queens, N.Y.) and Anzhane' Hutton (Dallas). After the season, Hutton received All-MEAC First Team recognition and All-Defensive Team honor while Howell and Warren earned All-MEAC Second Team.
 
NORFOLK STATE
 
NSU (17-10) seeks its first trip to the Big Dance since 2002.
 
Norfolk State's road-to-Saturday started with a narrow win over No. 7 North Carolina Central in the MEAC Quarterfinals, 58-52. Friday, the Spartans defeated No. 3 Morgan State on a game-winner, 53-51.
 
This year, the Spartans are led by All-MEAC honorees Deja Francis and Mahoganie Williams and MEAC Defensive Player of the Year Camille Downs.
 
LAST TIMEOUT
 
Thursday (March 11), Howard reached the MEAC title game for the second straight year after knocking off No. 5 Maryland Eastern Shore, 68-54, in the tourney semifinal round.
 
Warren led the charge, tying a career-best 21 points and six boards in the win.
 
UPCOMING SCHEDULE
