WASHINGTON (February 21, 2022) – Howard University men's tennis team dropped its spring opener against Mount St. Mary's (MSM), 4-3, at the Washington Tennis & Education Foundation's (WTEF) East Capitol Campus in Southeast D.C.
With the loss, HU fell to 0-1 on the young season while The Mount moved to .500 (2-2) overall.
Howard earned a match point in doubles competition, winning 2-out-of-3 contests.
Sophomore
Justin Cadeau (West Orange, N.J.) and newcomer
Daniel Dunac (Washington) served as the squad's No. 1 doubles team, defeating MSM's Elliot Stevens and Giovanni Abriola, 6-2.
Freshmen
Tory Bailey (Los Angeles) and
Marcel Dawson (Midland, Ga.) grabbed a victory over The Mount's Christos Dagklis and Russell Armstrong, 6-2.
Mount St. Mary's made-up lost ground in singles play, winning four-out-of-six matches from the Bison.
Dawson secured a three-set victory over Abriola (4-6, 6-3, 6-2).
Sophomore
Hassimiyou Dieng (Dakar, Senegal) edged out MSM's Jarrett Karnibad in three sets (1-6, 6-4, 10-2).
Friday (Feb. 25), Howard hosts Longwood in a nonconference matchup. First serve is set for 1 p.m. The following day (Feb. 26), HU wraps up its three-match homestand versus Loyola (Md.). Match time is slated for 2 p.m. Both contests will be played at WTEF East Capitol Campus in southeast D.C.
