WASHINGTON (February 20, 2022) – Howard University softball team earned a split Sunday afternoon at Washington Nationals Youth Academy in Southeast D.C. HU fell to Big 12 foe Iowa State (ISU), 10-2 (f/6), but rebounded with a big win over Quinnipiac (QU), 19-5 (f/5).
GAME TWO (Howard, 19, Quinnipiac 5 [f/5])
In the nightcap, HU produced 19 runs on 12 hits, including five hits for extra bases.
Newcomer
Victoria Brown (Carson, Calif.) led the Bison attack, going a perfect 3-of-3 with four RBIs and three runs scored.
QU took an early 2-0 lead until Brown cut the deficit to one after an RBI single drove in junior
Luz Aguilasocho (Grand Terrace, Calif.), 2-1.
Top three, the Bobcats added two more runs and extend the margin to three, 4-1.
In the bottom half, Howard erupted for 14 runs in the third inning and took a commanding 15-4 advantage after three.
Next inning, senior
Kalita Dennis (Elk Grove, Calif.) delivered a solo shot to left field that started a four-run rally, pushing the margin to 15 runs, 19-4.
Quinnipiac scored an unearned run in the fifth, but the Bison would cruise to victory.
Senior pitcher
Tracy Mosley (Jonesboro, Ga.) secured her first win of the season, going four innings and striking out four Bobcats.
GAME ONE (Howard 2, Iowa State 10 [f/6])
Howard produced seven hits, but only manufactured two runs against the Cyclones.
Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Preseason Player of the Year
Camille Navarro (Los Angeles) got HU on the board first with a solo homer, 1-0, but ISU tied the game after two innings, 1-1.
Top three, Iowa State's Mikayla Ramos gave the Cyclones their first lead, thanks to a solo shot, 2-1.
Next inning, ISU tallied three runs and extended the margin to five, 6-1.
After Iowa State scored twice in the fifth, 8-1, senior
Shayna Swanson (Sammamish, Wash.) scored on a wild pitch and cut the deficit to six, 8-2.
Top six, ISU pushed the lead to eight, 10-2, enforcing the eight-run mercy rule after six innings.
UPCOMING SCHEDULE
Monday (Feb. 21), HU closes the weekend with a seven-inning bout against Iowa State. First pitch is set for 10 a.m. at Washington Nationals Youth Academy.
