RICHMOND, Va. (December 11, 2022) – Howard University men's basketball redshirt junior
Steve Settle, III (Glenarden, Md.) led all scorers with 18 points, followed by sophomore
Bryce Harris (Brentwood, N.Y.) and third-year Bison
Jordan Wood (San Antonio) with 13 points and 12 points, respectively, and the defense held their opponent without a field goal over the last six minutes, but was not able to capitalize as HU fell, 70-60, to Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) in the Siegel Center.
Settle, a 6-foot-10 forward, who just missed a double-double last outing at Hampton (Dec. 3), kept Howard (4-8) close with 12 first half points, although the Bison trailed, 46-34, at intermission.
Wood, a 6-foot-8 forward, and Harris, a 6-foot-4 guard, began to find the range as the Bison erased the 12-point deficit and cut the margin to a one-possession game, 50-47, with just under 12 minutes remaining. Yet, each time the Bison made a run, the Rams would do just enough to keep them at bay.
The crucial time of the game came when the Bison defense shut down the hosts and did not allow them a field goal for over six minutes. During that period, Howard had numerous opportunities to take control, but it was not to be as VCU (6-4) managed to hold on for the victory.
The Bison return home Tuesday (Dec. 13) where they will host Florida International University (FIU) at 8 p.m. The game will air live on HBCU GO TV.
