MATCHUP PREVIEW
This is the second time that the two have met. In 2020, the Bulldogs came away with an 89-75 win at Burr in the annual MLK Day Classic.
HOWARD
Fresh off a hard-fought 56-55 road win over Austin Peay State University Saturday (Nov. 26), the Bison (4-5) overcame a nine-point deficit in the second half to hold off the Governors.
The Bison played without three key players, including leading scorer sophomore guard
Elijah Hawkins (Washington/team-leading 14.0 ppg and 4.0 apg) due to coach's decision. So, players like redshirt junior forward
Steve Settle, III (Glenarden, Md.), graduate guard
Jelani Williams (Washington) and reigning Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Defensive Player of the Week junior forward
Jordan Wood (San Antonio) stepped up while some reserves helped with small contributions on offense and defense.
Graduate forward
Kobe Dickson (Holcomb, Kan.), junior guard
Thomas Weaver (Upper Marlboro, Md.) and freshman guard
Ose Okojie (Brampton, Canada) all contributed in small but important ways, much to the delight of Howard head coach
Kenneth Blakeney.
"When you get a win like this on the road and under the circumstances of our schedule," said Blakeney on the team playing eight games in 10 days. "It's something to be pleased with."
YALE
In the Bulldogs (6-1), Howard faces yet another difficult challenge. Yale is coming off its first loss of the season at Colorado, 65-62.
The Bulldogs are undefeated at home, averaging over 80 points and featuring a balanced attack where eight players average between seven and 20 points, led by Matt Knowles with 19.6 points and 4.6 rebounds. John Poulakidas comes in second at almost 12 points per game.
LAST TIMEOUT
Settle (17 points), Wood (16 points) and Williams (14 points) combined for 47 of the team's points against Austin Peay.
The multi-talented Settle did most of his damage on the boards with a season-high 10 rebounds and at the free throw line, connecting on 9-of-10. The sharpshooting Wood hit on 6-of-12 from the floor, including 4-of-7 from beyond the arc. Versatile Williams also kept the Governors off balance with 6-of-9 shooting while also grabbing eight rebounds and dealing out a team-high five assists.
The Bison were able to complement the scoring of the three by forcing Austin Peay into 8-of-27 shooting from the field and 3-of-13 from three-point range. Howard also held an edge in fast break points (11-4).
UPCOMING SCHEDULE
Howard travels to Hampton, Va., to take on rival Hampton University Saturday (Dec. 3) at 5 p.m.
