Bison Bounce Back in 3-1 Win

NORFOLK, Va (November 9, 2022) - Howard University volleyball had a successful trip down to the Tidewater region. Defeating Norfolk State 3-1, the Bison moved to an 18-9 overall record while standing 11-2 in conference. The Spartans fell to a 7-16 record (7-6 MEAC).

The Spartans set the tone for the first set by opening the scoring with a kill. NSU went on a 3-0 run shortly after for a 7-3 lead. The gap grew when a couple of errors forced Howard to take a timeout at a 14-6 deficit. When down 24-13, the Bison kept the set alive sending three kills in a row before NSU's Shonte Seale (Bridgetown, Barbados) ended the battle 25-16.

Norfolk took the early lead once again, but it wasn't enough as the Bison ran away on an explosive 7-0 run for an 8-2 lead. The stunner forced the Spartans to regroup and come back with a kill. Howard retaliated with multiple unanswered charges aiding in a 24-12 lead at set point. Sophomore Dami Awojobi (Hempstead, NY) closed out the set with an ace.

Howard opened the scoring for the first set of the match before taking an 18-12 lead. The Spartans edged closer when a consecutive attack error and a bad set by Howard set the board 19-16. NSU capitalized on the momentum tying the score 20-20 with three back-to-back kills. The two teams traded attacks and a one-point lead before the Bison ended the charge 25-23.

In an exciting final set, the two were equally matched, tying the board 11 times. With a 20-18 lead, the Bison sent a volley of attacks when they recorded five consecutive kills to close the game 25-18.

Sophomore Cimone Woodard highlighted the match with a season high 13 kills while first year Rya McKinnon set a game-high 23 kills and 26.5 points.

The Bison recognize their seniors and face the Spartans once again to close out the regular season this Friday at 6 P.M.
