BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (October 6, 2022) - Howard University women's soccer team earned their first win of the season with a 1-0 victory over Long Island University (LIU) Thursday afternoon at LIU Soccer Park.
The win moves HU to a 1-4 conference mark (1-9-1 overall) while dropping the Sharks to a 3-8-3 overall record (1-2-2 NEC).
Coming out of intermission in a stalemate, the Bison made their move on the board in the 52
nd-minute mark. Converting a corner kick into a header in the top right corner, grad student
Victoria Thornton (Plainfield, Ill.) netted her first goal of the season with help from fellow grad student
Thalia Boucher (Toronto, Canada). The assist marked Boucher's first of the season as well.
Hungry for a goal, the Sharks were aggressive on the offensive front. LIU recorded seven fouls in the first half compared to the Bison's four. Putting six shots on target, Long Island outshot Howard, 19-10 overall, but came up short, never connecting with the net.
Junior goalkeeper
Jaida Hendricks (Waldorf, Md.) made her season debut, tying a career-high six saves while facing 19 shots.
The Bison are back at Greene Stadium this weekend as they host Central Connecticut State Sunday (October 9) in the Morgan's Message dedication game at 11 a.m.
