WASHINGTON (October 16, 2022) – Howard University women's volleyball team extended its win streak to a season-long six matches after knocking off South Carolina State (SCSU) in straight sets (25-8, 25-13, 25-15) at Burr Gymnasium.
Sophomore
Dami Awojobi (Hempstead, N.Y.) led the way with six kills in the win.
The Bison started the match off strong with a 5-1 advantage and solidified their lead when freshman defensive specialist
Claire Simpson (Plainfield, Ill.) came in the game and had a twelve-point serving streak. The Bulldogs struggled in serve receive, resulting in having to send over a number of free balls, which the Bison offense took full advantage. Senior middle blocker
Tamar Wells (Apopka, Fla.) earned four kills to have a 1.000 hitting percentage. The combination of attack and serve receive errors from the Bulldogs allowed Howard to finish the set 25-8.
Coach
Shaun Kupferberg started the second set with a new line up, including freshman setter
Leah Reeves (Allen, Texas). Reeves earned 12 assists while running the offense and senior outside hitter
Alex Smith (New Orleans) led the Bison with a .625 hitting percentage in game two. South Carolina State found a run in the middle of the set with a few solid serves and scrappy defense but the Bison offense put an end to the set with a .312 hitting percentage, compared to the Bulldogs' -.062 hitting percentage.
In set three, South Carolina State (0-18, 0-7 MEAC) took advantage of a few service and attack errors provided by the Bison, which led to a 5-2 Bulldog lead. Howard quickly turned the momentum after Reeves held the ball at the service line for a six-point run. With HU serving aggressively and the South Carolina State offense having some trouble, the Bison executed and finished the game with a kill by junior outside hitter
Kendall Smith (Glenview, Ill.).
Reeves finished with a match-leading 12 assists while Simpson produced seven digs in the victory.
On the afternoon, HU (12-7, 5-1 MEAC) recorded a .408 hitting percentage.
Eleisha Thompson and Semira Fields each had three kills in the loss.
Thursday (Oct. 20), Howard travels to Dover, Del., to face Delaware State. Match time is set for 6 p.m.
