Bison Sweep Eagles in Straight Sets

Box Score
WASHINGTON (October 13,2022) - Howard women's volleyball moves to a 10-7 overall season record (3-1, MEAC) with their three set sweep over American University Wednesday evening. The defeat drops the Eagles to a 12-9 season record (4-4, Patriot League)

Junior Jennifer Bolden (Los Angeles, Calif.) set the tone early opening the game with a kill assisted by Kayla Diaz (Nanuet, N.Y.). The Bison went on a 4-0 unanswered run to secure the lead in the first set. Feeling the set slip away, the Eagles began to close the gap point by point tying the score 11-11. AU overtook the Bison by one, that is before three consecutive kills by Howard gave HU the lead, 14-13. Kicking it up a notch, the Bison pulled away from the Eagles on another unanswered run to make it set point, 24-18. American sealed their first set loss with a service error.

The Bison made the first break in the score once again when first-year Rya McKinnon (Bessemer, Ala.) opened the second set with an ace. The Eagles retaliated later in the set with a six-point run giving them a 9-5 lead over Howard. A pair of 3-0 and 4-0 runs set the stage for a Bison comeback. A dominant 6-0 run was the final push securing the second set win of 25-22.

The Bison opened the final set with an explosive 4-0 run. That was all the advantage Howard needed as the Eagles trailed throughout the set. A kill by Tamar Wells (Apopka, Fla.) with the help of Diaz followed by Leah Reeves' (Allen, Texas) service ace were the final blows in the 25-14 set win,

Rya McKinnon led the attack with 15 kills while junior Jennifer Bolden held the defense with five blocks. Senior Kayla Diaz added 39 assists to her season's stats.

The Bison host North Carolina Central University Friday at 6pm in the Truth & Service/Morgan's Message dedication game.
