BALTIMORE (January 24, 2022) – With less than five ticks remaining, Coppin State's Nendah Tarke scored the go-ahead three-point play to down the Howard University men's basketball team in a nail biter, 83-81, inside PEC Arena.
With the loss, HU dropped to 7-9 (1-2 MEAC) while Coppin State (CSU) improved to 4-15 (3-1 MEAC).
Four Bison scored in double figures, led by guards
Kyle Foster (Hampton, Va.) and
Elijah Hawkins (Washington) with 19 points apiece.
Howard scored 50 points in the first half after shooting over 59-percent (16-of-27) from the floor, including a scorching 71-percent (10-of-14) from downtown.
HU jumped out to an early double-digit lead, thanks to a trey ball from graduate
Sam Green (Bowie, Md.), 18-7.
Howard continued to put the pressure on, extending the advantage to 21 points after a long ball by Foster, 29-8.
With less than nine minutes before intermission, Hawkins found Foster for another three-pointer and gave the Bison their largest lead, 39-13.
CSU clawed its way back, getting to the charity stripe while forcing multiple Bison into foul trouble.
Coppin State closed out the first period on a 28-11 run and pulled the contest within single digits, 50-41.
After intermission, graduate
Randall Brumant (Houston) ballooned the lead back to double digits, 61-50, but the Eagles refused to go away.
In the waning moments, CSU's Tyree Corbett made a layup and pulled the Eagles within one with 10 seconds left, 81-80.
After a called timeout, Corbett stole the inbound and found a cutting Tarke for a layup and foul to put the Eagle ahead.
Redshirt sophomore
Steve Settle, III (Glenarden, Md.) recorded 15 points and eight rebounds while Brumant added 10 points and six boards in the loss.
Corbett had a game-high 25 points while Tarke chipped in 19 points, including the go-ahead three-point play.
On Jan. 29, Howard continues to road swing in Durham, N.C., against the North Carolina Central Eagles. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m.
