WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Howard University Women's Basketball team looks to continue its winning ways and earn its second consecutive Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) victory of the season. This Saturday, the Bison travels to Morgan State to face the Bears at Hill Field House for a 2 p.m. tip-off.
Howard leads the series versus Morgan State, 54-23. The Bison split last season's four-game series, winning one game away and at home on its way to a MEAC Northern Divison Title.
Howard, a winner of two straight, is coming off a 67-52 MEAC victory at UMES in the Bison conference opener. Destiny Howell scored a game-high 20 points, while Iyanna Warren finished with 14 points, a game-high eight assists, and three steals. Anzhane' Hutton, the reigning MEAC Defensive Player of the week, added 11 points two blocks.
The Bears saw their season-high six-game winning streak end, following a 67-65 loss to crosstown rival Coppin State. Adia Brisker led the Bears with 20 points while adding four rebounds, two blocks, two assists, and a steal. Taylor Addison shot 6-for-6 from the floor, including 3-for-3 from three-point range to finish with 18 points. Addison, who also knocked down all three of her free throw attempts, grabbed a game-high nine rebounds, falling one board shy of a double-double.
About the Bison
- Head Coach Ty Grace won her 155th game as a head coach versus Frostburg St. and is nine games from reaching the 100 win game mark as a Bison.
- The 2020-21 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Northern Division Champions fell in the finals of the 2021 conference tournament. However, the Bison took the league by storm last season. Despite the pandemic, Howard went 10-2 in conference play and 15-4, with non-conference wins versus LaSalle, George Washington, Mount Saint Mary's, and Richmond.
- The Bison were selected No. 1 in the MEAC Preseason Poll.
- Three Bison was named the Preseason All-MEAC Team, Anzhane' Hutton, Kaiya Creek, and Iyanna Warren.
- Howard head coach Ty Grace enters her seventh season at the helm, named 2020-21 MEAC Coach of the Year.
- The Bison only lost one starter from last season's team.
- Last season, Howard posted the best regular-season winning percentage (.823) in school history. In addition, the Bison's defense ranked sixth nationally in field-goal percentage defense (33.9) and three-point field goal defense (25.6). Howard's 28.9 defensive rebounds ranked 30th in the NCAA led by 2020-21 Rookie of the Year Anzhane' Hutton. Hutton was also named to the All-MEAC second team, All-Rookie, and All-Defensive team.
About the Bears
- To date, Morgan State has forced 272 opponent turnovers while collecting a league-leading 140 steals (12.7) per game. Morgan State forced an opponent season-high 40 turnovers out of Washington Adventist (11/24) and turned those turnovers into 40 points. Thirty of the turnovers were by way of steals, with Brisker and Atmore leading the way with five steals apiece. The 40 turnovers surpassed the previous season-high of 36 by Notre Dame of Maryland (11/19). The Lady Bears scored a season-high 48 points off Notre Dame.
- Morgan State ended its longest in-season hiatus between games in program history when it finally returned to the floor against Coppin State (1/15). It had been 38 days since the Lady Bears last played a game – a 64-55 victory at Loyola Maryland (12/8). Since that time, Morgan has had four canceled or postponed games due to Covid protocols either in the MSU or its opponent's program.
- As a team, Morgan State has recorded 140 steals on the season through its first 11 games, which ranks No. 1 in the MEAC. Brisker leads the team with 29 steals, while teammate Atmore has totaled 27 thefts. Brisker averages 2.6 steals per game, and Atmore is recording 2.5 steals, which rank first and second, respectively, in the MEAC.
2022 MEAC TOURNAMENT: The 2022 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) men's and women's basketball tournament is set for March 9-12, 2022, at the Norfolk Scope Arena in Norfolk, Va.
