Women's Basketball Opens MEAC Play at UMES

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Howard University women's basketball team returns to action to face the University of Maryland Easternshore in Hytche Athletic Center.

The Bison and the Hawks will open up conference play after several postponements and rescheduling due to Covid-19. 

The Hawks (4-8, 0-0 MEAC) have not played since a Dec. 21 loss at East Carolina. They were initially supposed to face Norfolk State Monday in a matchup already pushed back once from Jan. 8. 


 

Howard (6-6, 0-0 MEAC) opens up their conference play after several changes to their schedule to tip off the January schedule. 
 

Howard leads the all-time series 61-22.


 

About the Bison

 

  • Head Coach Ty Grace won her 155th game as a head coach versus Frostburg St. and is 10 games from reaching the 100 win game mark as a Bison 
  • The 2020-21 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Northern Division Champions fell in the finals of the 2021 conference tournament. However, the Bison took the league by storm last season. Despite the pandemic, Howard went 10-2 in conference play and 15-4, with non-conference wins versus LaSalle, George Washington, Mt. Saint Mary's, and Richmond. 
  • The Bison were selected No. 1 in the MEAC Preseason Poll.
  • Three Bison was named the Preseason All-MEAC Team, Anzhane' HuttonKaiya Creek, and Iyanna Warren.
  • Howard head coach Ty Grace enters her seventh season at the helm, named 2020-21 MEAC Coach of the Year. 
  • The Bison only lost one starter from last season's team. 
  • Last season, Howard posted the best regular-season winning percentage (.823) in school history. In addition, the Bison's defense ranked sixth nationally in field-goal percentage defense (33.9) and three-point field goal defense (25.6). Howard's 28.9 defensive rebounds ranked 30th in the NCAA led by 2020-21 Rookie of the Year Anzhane' Hutton. Hutton was also named to the All-MEAC second team, All-Rookie, and All-Defensive team.

Six players scored in double figures for Howard, led by Anzhane' Hutton seventh career double-double (15pts-15rbs) cruised past Frostburg State Saturday afternoon in Bobcat arena, 100-53. 


 

Howard opened the contest on a seven-to-nothing run by controlling the offensive glass and connecting on five second-chance points, which sparked a 17-9 run capped by an Aniya Wilson layup off of an offensive rebound by Anzhane' Hutton, to expand the lead, 24-9. The Bobcat closed the first quarter scoring four points in the final thirty seconds to close the gap, 24-13. 
 

The Bison used strong shooting to pull away from the Bobcats in the second quarter, shooting 60 percent [12-of-20] from the floor while holding Frostburg State to 29 percent [5-of-17]. As a result, Howard went into intermission leading 50-29. 


Howard cruised the rest of the way, pulling their starters midway through the third quarter, giving valuable playing time to the reserves. Then, Kayia Creek exploded for 12 fourth quarter-points and five rebounds as the Bison cruised to a 100-53 victory before heading into conference play. The Bison last scored past the century mark versus former MEAC foe Savannah State defeating the Tigers 106-70 [3/2/19]


 

About the Hawks
 

•The Hawks will see conference action for the first time since the 2019-20 MEAC Basketball Tournament was abruptly ended at the start of the pandemic. UMES opted out last season.

•Last played Dec. 21., a total of 26 days. 
• Graduate student Amanda Carney  leads the Hawks in scoring (8.7), 3-point percentage (.344), 3-pointers made (22), free throw percentage (.952) and minutes per game (22.4). She pushed her career total of 3-pointers made to 122 at ECU passing Tiffany Reid (2005-09) and moving into sixth place.

The Bison plays the next five conference games on the road, starting with today's game versus UMES. After that, Howard will stay in the DMV and face Morgan State, Sat. Jan. 22, then Coppin State, Mon. Jan. 24.
