DURHAM, N.C. (September 3, 2021) – Howard University women's volleyball team wrapped up the weekend with a four-set (19-25, 29-27, 25-27, 24-26) against Miami (Ohio) at the Duke Invitational, hosted by the Blue Devils.
With the setback, HU came away empty (0-3) in Durham, N.C.
Newcomers
Bria Woodard (Missouri City, Texas) and
Cimone Woodard (Missouri City, Texas) led the way against Miami. Bria produced a double-double (14 kills & 11 digs) while her sister recorded 12 kills in the loss.
After dropping game one, 19-25, the Bison rebounded and took set two, 29-27.
In the pivotal third set, Miami escaped with the win and regained the match lead, 2-1.
Both squads went back-and-forth in game four, but the RedHawks would outlast HU, 24-26, and win the match, 3-1.
Junior
Alex Smith (New Orleans) added 12 kills and five total blocks (team-high) in a losing effort.
Junior
Essence Bell (Ocala, Fla.) made her Bison debut this weekend, averaging nearly 15 digs per match. With her efforts, she was named to the All-Tournament Team.
For Miami (2-4), Gaby Harper notched a double-double (18 digs & 15 kills) while Sophie Riemersma registered a match-high 17 kills in the win.
HU (2-4) heads to Baltimore for the Charm City Challenge (Sept. 10-11). The four-team event puts Howard against Quinnipiac, Big Ten foe Maryland and reigning American East Champion UMBC.
