WASHINGTON (September 30, 2021) – Howard University women's soccer team closed out its home stand with a 3-0 shutout over Long Island (LIU) at Greene Stadium. With the win, HU extended its winning streak to three.
Freshman forward
Melea Earley (Whittier, Calif.) displayed another multi-goal performance, producing a pair of goals in the victory.
Nearly halfway through the first half, Earley scored on an unassisted goal and gave HU a 1-0 edge at the break.
After intermission, the California native registered her second goal of the day off a blocked shot and extended the lead, 2-0.
At the 78-minute mark, senior midfielder
Victoria Thornton (Plainfield, Ill.) delivered a header off a corner kick from newcomer
Savannah Hersh (Huntingtown, Md.) to put the contest out of reach.
Howard's backline notched its second shutout of the season while graduate student
Alayah Hightower (Mitchville, Md.) added a match-high six saves in the victory.
In the three-match home stand, HU outscored the competition, 8-1, while moving over .500 (4-3, 3-1 NEC) for the first time since opening night (Aug. 23).
Sunday (Oct. 3), the Bison take on St. Francis-Brooklyn at Brooklyn Bridge Park. Match time is scheduled for 11 a.m.
