BALTIMORE (September 11, 2021) – Howard University women's volleyball team closed out the weekend on a high note, topping Quinnipiac in four sets (22-25, 25-17, 25-22, 25-16) at the Charm City Challenge, presented by Sir Speedy.
With the win, HU snapped its six-match skid while the Bobcats dropped to 1-8 on the season.
Junior outside hitter
Alex Smith (New Orleans) led the Bison with a match-high 16 kills while producing a .295 hitting percentage. Newcomer
Bria Woodard (Missouri City, Texas) notched her second career double-double (20 digs & 14 kills in the victory.
After dropping the opening set, 22-25, HU responded with a .382 hitting percentage and evened the match at one apiece.
In set two, Quinnipiac held a 19-17 advantage late until Howard closed out the game on an 8-3 run to win, 25-22, and took the match lead, 2-1.
HU dominated set four, scoring the first seven points and never looking back to win the set, 25-16, and match, 3-1.
Senior setter
Milexa Cardona (Kissimmee, Fla.) notched a double-double (37 assists & 10 digs) while rookie
Cimone Woodard (Missouri City, Texas) added 11 kills in the win.
Defensively, graduate middle blocker
Ana Williams (Baker, La.) registered a career-high nine total blocks (one solo) while senior outside hitter
Kailyn Williams (Arlington, Texas) added six kills and five total blocks.
Junior libero
Essence Bell (Ocala, Fla.) recorded a season-high 32 digs in the victory.
For Quinnipiac, Maggie Baker (13 kills & 12 digs), Aryanah Diaz (26 digs & 12 kills) and Olga Zampati (19 digs & 10 kills) each produced a double-double in a losing effort.
HU returns to The Mecca for a three-match home stand versus Pac-12 opponent Oregon (Sept. 16), Ivy League rival Harvard (Sept. 17) and crosstown foe American (Sept. 21) before starting league play.
