Senior Spotlight: The Grad Edition…Featuring Indira Dandridge

A chat with MEAC Champion Indira Dandridge

WASHINGTON (June 8, 2021) – Howard University Public Relations major rising senior A'Maiya Allen resumed the 2020-21 Senior Spotlight series with a graduate edition, featuring volleyball's Indira Dandridge (Miami).

Q: Why did you choose Howard?
A: My aunt went to Howard and encouraged me to attend an HBCU. So, I went on an unofficial visit to Howard, toured the School of Business and met a lot of people. After my visit, I considered an HBCU and wanted to play on a team with Black women.

Q: What is your favorite Howard memory?
A: My favorite Howard memory was during my freshman year when we got the opportunity to play abroad for two weeks in Botswana and Zimbabwe. We were coaching kids in the heat while they played on pavement with no shoes. They were so appreciative of us coming and had a willingness to learn.

That trip put my life into perspective on the many things that I take for granted.

Q: If you could describe your Howard experience in one word, what would it be?
A: One word…rollercoaster because of the many highs and lows throughout the journey. But that's the beauty of the journey because you are ready for the real world.

Q: When did you start playing volleyball?
A: I started playing volleyball when I was in the sixth grade at 11 years old.

Q: Which volleyball player do you admire?
A: When I was in high school, I watched Haleigh Washington. She played for Penn State and currently on Team USA.

Our team got the opportunity to play against her during my freshman year and she was super intimidating (lol). After the match, I was able to meet Haleigh and she was super positive and nice.

Q: If you were not playing volleyball, what other sport would you play?
A: I love tennis and played the sport for a little while. If I could be more consistent, I feel like I could be really good.

Q: What is one message you would leave for the rest of your team?
A: I would advise them to not overthink on certain situations and trust your intuition. Don't let peer pressure force you into something you're not comfortable in doing.

Q: What is the biggest lesson you have learned from the pandemic?
A: One of the biggest lessons I've learned is that tomorrow is not promised and you have to live every moment to the fullest. COVID-19 has put a lot of things into perspective for our generation and people get so wrapped up into social media that sometimes they forget about the real issues in society.

Q: Now that you're a graduate, what are your plans for the future?
A: I am looking into different job offers in the sports and entertainment industry. Eventually, I want to obtain a Master's degree in marketing.
