Senior Spotlight: The Grad Edition…featuring DeAngela Fobbs

A talk with DMV native DeAngela Fobbs

WASHINGTON (June 30, 2021) – Howard University Department of Athletics' Senior Spotlight series rolls on with a grad edition, featuring swimmer DeAngela Fobbs (Bowie, Md.), who was interviewed by advertising major, rising senior Kennedy Lewis.

Q: What is your favorite part about swimming?
A: My favorite part about swimming is the feeling of looking at the clock after a meet because of all the energy you put into the match.

Q: How did you get started in swimming?
A: My grandmother was the first person to truly teach me how to swim. We would go to the pool twice a week.

Q: What kept you motivated?
A: I always wanted to be a student-athlete like my mom. Plus, the team aspect provided a whole new world.

Q: If you were not competing in swimming, what other sport would you do?
A: I'm not even sure (lol); however, if I was about 5-foot-9, I would have picked volleyball.

Q: Who is your favorite athlete? How have they motivated you?
A: It's hard to pick one athlete because, in my sport, we are constantly trying to break the boundaries of stereotypes.

In my case, I'm always pushing my teammates and they are always pushing me.

Q: What are your plans post-graduation?
A: Currently, I'm studying for my MCAT. Also, I'm planning on going into the Navy as an officer once everything is complete.

Q: What or who will you miss at Howard?
A: I have made so many unique friendships in different aspects while growing into the woman that I love today. I will miss all my friends, but we will be making yearly trips.

Q: What advice would you give future Bison?
A: My advice is don't be afraid to explore and learn. Making mistakes and learning from them is the best way of ensuring your growth overall.

Q: Who would you like to thank?
A: I first want to thank God, my mom and grandma because without them I wouldn't be where I am today.

Also, I want to thank my Bison swim family, AFROTC family and all my friends in between.
