WASHINGTON (June 29, 2021) – Howard University advertising major rising senior
Kennedy Lewis resumed the 2020-21 Senior Spotlight series with a grad edition, featuring swimmer
Nia-Carole Parker (Wyncote, Pa.).
Q: What is your favorite part about swimming?
A: My favorite part about swimming is being able to push myself, mentally and physically, past my expectations, along with my teammates support.
Q: How did you get started in swimming?
A: I first started swimming because of my older brother. He was a swimmer and I loved the sport so much that I continued to swim.
Q: What kept you motivated?
A: My family, friends and teammates kept me motivated.
Q: If you were not competing in swimming, what other sport would you do?
A: If I decided not to compete in swimming, I would have loved to try either soccer, volleyball or track and field.
Q: Who is your favorite athlete? How did he/she motivated you?
A:
Simone Manuel (Olympic Medalist) is my favorite athlete because not only is she a skilled athlete, but I saw her make history in becoming the first African-American woman to win an individual Olympic gold medal in swimming. She has inspired so many Black children, especially Black girls, because anything is possible.
Q: What's your most memorable Howard experience?
A: My most memorable experience would be spring time at Howard because every year when the temperature gets warmer, everyone is on the yard hanging out, listening/playing music and jump roping to double dutch.
Honestly, that time of year at Howard is unmatched.
Q: What are your plans post-graduation?
A: I plan to attend grad school, but I'm taking a gap year to get some job experience, travel and study so I can be prepared for the next chapter of my life.
Q: What or who will you miss at Howard?
A: I'll miss the friends, teammates and the culture/experience that comes with going to Howard. Being able to be in such an inspiring environment where there are Black people from all over the world striving to make a difference and be successful in life.
Q: What advice would you give future Bison?
A: Don't take your time at Howard for granted because college goes by quickly. Enjoy so you don't look back and regret.
Q: Who would you like to thank?
A: I would like to thank my coaches, professors, teammates, friends and family for being so supportive and allowing me to experience Howard University.
